이러고 + Verb

Let’s take a look at the pattern 이러고 + Verb. We use this in question form to make a remark about someone’s way of doing something which you find unpleasant or not good. In other words, it has a negative connotation. You are not expecting a response as you see it with your own eyes, but you are rather sending a signal of your indifference. For example, you want to surprise your brother who is living in another city for university. He has no idea that you are coming and the moment you step into his flat, everything is a mess- rubbish on the floor, unfolded clothes, unwashed plates, etc. In here, you can say is this how you live?

이러고 놀아?
This is how you play?
(playing with kids you can easily fool?)

이러고 살아?
This is how you live?

오빠가 이러고 일해요?
This is how you work?

아버지가 이러고 사업해요?
Dad, this is how you do your business?
(that business is sort of illegal)
